My Strategies to find the Opensource projects✨

Hey folks,

Hope you are all doing well. We all know that opensource has been in a boom💥 nowadays. Finally, the people are realizing the importance of learning in public & contributing together. A lot of job opportunities are getting available for opensource people. Top notch unicorns in the world are switching & moving to opensource.

I use to get a lot DM's regarding opensource contributions & one question which was common in all the DM's was "How to find opensource projects?". So thought of sticking to this topic & share my experience regarding the above question.

3 things that helped me find opensource projects

  • Being active on twitter📱 :

By this, i don't mean to stay active all the day & keep looking for the projects, but whenever you stay active, try to take most out of it. For eg: When you are active on twitter & you see any company or product handle posts(Obviously, the company or product must be related to tech, DevOps, Data, Cloud, Web development), try to visit their github account, try to go through their documentation, see if you find any mistake & then correct & open the PR. This has been proved to be most helpful thing for me to hunt down opensource projects. I found Daily.dev this way only.

  • Networking🧑‍🤝‍🧑 :

Network!!....Network!!....Network!!. This is another important thing which helped in finding projects. This can be really referred to as superpower. Follow a lot of techie people on twitter(but please, don't expect follow back). What happens is, if they are already working on opensource projects & makes any tweet regarding it, then you already found a opensource project my friend😀. So if you luckily came across even 50 different tweets from different people in a week considering above scenario, you found 50 opensource projects🎉🎉. Finding Amplication is the result of this strategy.

  • Joining Developer communities👨‍💻 :

Nowadays, there are thousands of developer communities on LinkedIn, Slack, Discord. Commclassroom & Eddiehub named to be few for opensource. You can find a lot of like-minded people working on their projects & needing help with their issues. Again here, lot of people means lot of projects. You can help them in resolving their issues & start with opensource. My first opensource contribution was to the chat application of college guy which i found with this strategy.

At last, one thing i would love to bring to the notice of everyone is, all of the above things takes a lot of time & one needs to be very calm & patient(I found my first opensource project after 6 months after i was familiar with concept of opensource)

Hope i was able to help you with this blog & my experiences. Stay tuned for more blogs!
